CSUN California State University, Northridge is located in one of the most exciting cities in the world, Los Angeles, California. CSUN is the ideal location for international students to experience the advantages of living and studying in California within a dynamic metropolis full of interesting people and educational opportunities. CSUN offers both a study abroad program for one or two semesters and also welcomes first-time, transfer and graduate students looking to complete their university degrees in the United States.
Founded in 1958, CSUN is now one of the largest public universities in California, serving more than 40,000 students each year including 3000 international students. CSUN has students that come from more than 100 countries and has decades of experience hosting international students. The university has over 1900 faculty teaching staff, over 90% of them with doctorates. In 2014, Open Doors ranked CSUN number one among master’s universities in the USA in terms of the number of international students enrolled. Semester at CSUN students are given full access to campus facilities and services including: the fitness center, health center, library, tutoring services, student clubs and intramural sports.
CSUN offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in more than 200 fields and majors. California State University, Northridge accreditation is awarded by various recognized accreditation bodies including the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and approved by ministry of higher education in all countries making it suitable for sponsored students. In addition to the full degrees offered at the university, international students can join the university for just one semester or one year which with fully accredited transcript, this program is called “Semester at CSUN”
Semester at CSUN Program
Semester at CSUN (SAC) is a study abroad program that enables international students to enroll at the university for one semester or one year. In all classes, SAC students are integrated with degree-seeking students. Semester at CSUN provides international students:
- Access to university classes in a variety of departments
- Academic credits that can be transferred to the student’s home university
- Academic advisement and registration assistance
- University transcript accredited by ministry of higher education
Intensive English Program at CSUN
The intensive English language preparation program (IEP) is taught on the university campus and offers year-round, full-time English language classes throughout the year. Program details are:
- Starts date in January, March, June, August and October.
- Academic English-language and university-preparation instruction focused on academic success.
- Helps students improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and research.
- Includes TOEFL preparation, IELTS preparation and free one-on-one tutoring.
- Advanced IEP students can take classes for CSUN credit simultaneously during the IEP course
- Offers conditional admission to undergraduate and certain graduate programs at CSUN
- Accepts students at all levels of English-language proficiency even from beginner level

Students can transfer from another college to CSUN bachelor degree through the credit transfer program as long as they have previously completed the four basic subject requirements including college-level math, critical thinking, speech and written communications or their equivalent for international students.
University Student Life
Visiting international students are welcomed as full members of the campus community with access to campus facilities, activities and student support services. California State University, Northridge student life facilities include:
University Student Union (USU)
The USU is a busy town square with amenities for students: a bank, a ticket booth for discounted tickets and transit passes, a performance hall, a game room, a variety of food options and a wide range of events.
Student Recreation Center (SRC)
The SRC is a 12,820 square meter, state-of-the-art, LEED certified facility for exercise and leisure activity. Students can sign up for fitness classes and join intramural sports teams.
The resources and services offered by the Oviatt Library include research assistance, IT help, technology checkout, charging lockers, group study rooms, a creative media studio and free tutoring services at the Learning Resource Center.
Klotz Student Health Center
Klotz Health Center provides board-certified physicians in family medicine, internal medicine, sports medicine, gynecology and a variety of other areas. Students may also access specialists in physical therapy, chiropractic services, massage therapy, optometry and dentistry.
Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC)
The VPAC is an award-winning professional performance center, bringing the highest caliber of arts to the region. Student tickets are offered at a discounted rate.

Northridge is a “university town” with many shops and restaurants within walking distance of campus. Many students live on campus in furnished, apartment-style units within a secure, gated environment. The student housing area includes laundry rooms, swimming pools, sports courts, a satellite student services office, a coffee shop and lounge areas for relaxing and studying. International student housing is available for SAC students on a first-come, first-served basis and therefore early accommodation booking is highly recommended.

California State University, Northridge FAQs
After you have been accepted at CSUN, SAC program advisors will contact you with feedback on the course selections submitted with your application. Students usually receive a confirmed class schedule or a study plan approximately two or three weeks before the start of the semester.
While no specific semester course selection can be guaranteed, CSUN will do their best to enroll students in as many of their preferred courses as possible, based on the student’s eligibility and course availability.
California State University, Northridge is located in a safe, residential neighborhood. CSUN has its own police department on campus that provides services to the university community 24 hours a day/seven days a week, making it one of the safest universities in California.
Many dorm housing options are available within walking or biking distance from the campus, such as homestay families or private apartments and houses for rent in Northridge and the surrounding neighborhoods. Some students prefer to live close to the beach or in another area of Los Angeles and drive to campus.
CSUN is located near three major hospitals in case of a medical emergency. For non-emergencies, the Student Health Center is located on the university campus and provides services at little or no cost to the students. The medical center is staffed with board-certified physicians, doctors, physical therapists, dentists, optometrists and more, and includes an on-site pharmacy.
SAC students may purchase a membership to the Student Recreation Center that features: state-of-the-art weight and fitness zones, a rock climbing wall, a gymnasium, an indoor track, two outdoor swimming pools, and more. Members can participate in group exercise classes, as well as a variety of team sports through organized intramurals.
