British
Government and British Council Scholarships Schemes
Commonwealth
Scholarship and Fellowship Plan
The Commonwealth Scholarships Commission in the UK, through
the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, offers Commonwealth
Scholarships to any overseas Commonwealth citizen wishing
to study at postgraduate level in the UK. Undergraduate awards
are offered only where a course is unavailable in the candidate's
own country. The scholarship pays for fares to and from the
applicant's home country for the scholar (but not for the
spouse or dependants), approved fees, maintenance, contributions
towards the cost of books, apparatus and if necessary clothing.
Contributions towards approved travel within the country of
study are also given. A marriage and child allowance may be
available. Scholarships are normally available to candidates
who have graduated from a first degree within the last ten
years. The commission also administers Commonwealth Academic
Staff Scholarships for research, postgraduate degrees and
fellowships. Candidates are nominated by local agencies in
the Commonwealth country concerned. Applications: Contact
the Commonwealth Scholarship Agency in your home country.
These are usually based at the Ministry of Education.
Foreign
and Commonwealth Office Scholarships
British Chevening Scholarships (Formerly known as the Foreign
and Commonwealth Office Scholarships and Awards Scheme - FCOSAS)
British Chevening Scholarships are funded by the Foreign and
Commonwealth Office. Scholarships may be for study in any
subject field but in countries which are recipients of UK
bilateral aid, the developmental relevance of the course is
likely to be of primary importance. Awards are given to those
wishing to follow full-time postgraduate or second degree
courses or to pursue full-time research at or based in a UK
institution of higher education in the public sector. Preference
is given to postgraduates or those already established in
a career. Awards are normally made for formal courses of postgraduate
study, e.g. a Master's degree, but are also occasionally given
for shorter, vocationally oriented courses, or for research
attachments, lasting between three and six months. Awards
may be given to cover all or part of the cost of the period
of study. Applications: Selection of candidates is carried
out by British Embassies and High Commissions in consultation
with the local British Council Representative. All applications
must therefore be made through the British Diplomatic Mission
in the student's country of origin.
