Postgraduate Research Degrees (MPhil, PhD, MD, and DBA)

Course entry requirements to study in the UK vary according to the course and institution. For many taught master courses you need qualifications that prove you will be able to study successfully. Many international qualifications meet entrance requirements to various master courses.

To begin a postgraduate research or PhD degree, you will need to have a first degree and usually a taught Master's degree. You also need to prepare a detailed research proposal of your research topic. Every research proposal is considered individually. Students will be judged on their individual merits, and the requirements may occasionally be relaxed, depending on age, experience, and other factors.

If the process seems overwhelming, remember: there are usually just SIX STEPS to accomplish:

1	Research Proposal	This is a detailed (1000 - 2000 words) proposal of your research topic. Please see our guide on how to write a research proposal. Proposal Samples are also provided. If your are applying for science or engineering subjects, there is no need for a research proposal.
2	First Degree	First degree in a relevant subject, grades depend on course and quality of institutions.
3	Master Degree	Master degree in a relevant subject, grades depend on course and quality of institution.
4	English Language	Institutions vary in their English language entry requirements. Usual requirements are: IELTS at grade 6, TOEFL (paper-based) 550, or Cambridge CPE at grade C.
5	References	Approach two referees and ask each one to write a full reference on official letterhead about your personal qualities, work and career to date, particular emphasis should be put on your academic capabilities.
6	Application	Complete our standard on-line application form
