Cost
of living
The cost of living varies from one part of the UK to another.
Generally it is more expensive to live in London and the south-east
of England, and cheaper elsewhere. The figures below provide
only a guideline. They include basic living costs (accommodation,
energy bills, food, daily travel) and other necessary expenses
(books, equipment and other study expenses, clothing, leisure,
incidental personal expenses) for a twelve month period. Expenditure
for a nine month period would be proportionately less. Typical
basic living costs and necessary expenses for various regions
are as follows:
| London, Oxford and Cambridge |
£7,450 |
| Elsewhere in Britain |
£5,150 to £6,700 |
Additional expenses when you first arrive might include the
following:
| Books and equipment |
£320 to £740 |
| Warm clothing |
£400 to £450 |
| Deposit on rented accommodation (usually be the equivalent
of one month's rent) |
£200 to £400 |
| Temporary accommodation (while you find a permanent place
to live or until accommodation at your institution becomes
available) |
£25 to £45 per night |
You may find that you can live more cheaply if, for example,
you are able to stay with relatives, or you may wish to enjoy
a more expensive lifestyle. The figures given above are only
a rough guide.
